Nunchaku
_
also known as
nunchuck, two-section staf,
two-segmented cudgel,
sousetsukon,
雙節棍, ヌンチャク,
雙節棍
…is basically a two section wooden, or sometimes metal
sticks connected at their ends with a short rope, or chain. The
ideal length of each stick should be roughly the length of the
user’s forearm, measuring from the wrist to the end of the
elbow. Traditionally, both ends are of equal length but asymmetrical
exist as well. Chinese nunchakus tend to be round and have a long
chain while Japanese nunchakus tend to be octagonal and have a
short rope.

The
Weapon of Choice for
The Warrior of Peace_
To me, the nunchaku is not a weapon to slay, unlike a sword
or gun. I believe that the nunchaku is mainly used for defensive
situations, as intimidation or to perform immobilazation techniques.
Although it is capable of dealing fatal blows and even deadly
strangulation holds, in essence I believe that the nunchaku
is a weapon used to protect and not to kill. Unlike a gun where
any child can pick up and by simply pulling the trigger, end
his or someone else’s life and unlike a sword or knife
where a simple stab wound could prove critical due to a substantial
blood loss, the nunchaku is only capable of bringing death if
it is in the right hands. In other words, it is mainly used
to knock someone out rather than to chop their head off. Therefore,
I believe the nunchaku is the ideal weapon of choice for the
Warrior of Peace.

Nunchaku in Combat
and Advantages_
When used in combat, the nunchaku provides the obvious advantage
of an increase in the reach of one's strike. The Range is often
underestimated; a nunchaku at standard length with just a longer
chain can match the length of a katana. The rope or chain joint
of the nunchaku adds deceitful attacks, striking from unexpected
angles. The motion of the nunchaku is often found distracting
by opponents, who may have trouble keeping up with the nunchaku's
swift and fast movement.
*Striking
The nunchaku is capable of dealing crippling blows from
all 360 degree angles. This includes attacking from the
top, bottom, left, right, left downward diagonal, right
downward diagonal, left upward diagonal, and right upward
diagonal. However that is not all, the nunchaku is also
proficient of dealing additional strikes, one in which is
executed by popping the stick straight out from the user’s
armpit, this devastating attack pierces your enemy with
the very tip of stick. Advanced users can even apply further
striking techniques by holding each stick out, grabbing
it by the sides and using it like somewhat like a baton.
Hence, the sticks are used for striking.
*Trapping
The nunchaku is capable of trapping and immobilizing almost
all weapons that cross its path. This includes everything
from short range to long range weapons and even to hand
to hand combat. For example, if an enemy comes at you thrusting
with a long wooden pole, one skilled with the nunchaku can
easily seize the pole and throw the opponent off balance
or close in for an attack. The same technique can be applied
for long swords and spears. Now, let’s say that someone
is coming at you punching or with a short knife swinging,
the similar technique can be applied but now to the enemy’s
wrist. Once their wrist is immobilized and completely lock,
you can constrict the grip forcefully until they drop their
weapon, or close in to administer a punishing strangulation
or submission hold. Hence, the rope or chain is used for
trapping and chokes.
*Blocking
The nunchaku is capable of blocking attacks coming from
the top, bottom or sides. Visualize this, you enemy is approaching
you wielding a katana over his head, in a quick second the
enemy lunges at you with a fierce slashing attack coming
from the top. A skilled nunchaku practitioner can simply
block this attack by easily extending the chain over his
head and using the chain as a shield. If the nunchaku practitioner
is really adept, he can even deflect the attack and throw
the enemy off balance. This is done by precisely timing
your enemy’s attack, snapping back the chain of the
nunchaku at the right time so that the chain acts somewhat
like a spring and bounces the sword away.
